A Little Culture with a Splash of Fashion!

Photography: Ken Howard/Metropolitan Opera

Prada at the Opera???

One would never think that high fashion would be part of the Theatre, Opera, or Ballet. But one would be so very, very wrong in their assumption!

Tonight the New York City Metropolitan Opera premieres Giussepe Verdi's Attila with costumes designed by Miucci Prada.

This is Miucci's debut opera production in costume design for the Arts. And from what I have seen she has a very interesting take on Verdi's Attila and her vision for the costumes that represent the story-line.

Her Post Apocalyptic designs were influenced by a story-line with modern day elements of political instability, religious conflict, and the collapse of a society that is both familiar and yet on the brink of major transformation/revolution. Her costumes consist of long maxi distressed leather coats in rust and black with brass bolts, fringe, and metal studs. Muted color dresses of gunny sack like fabric, made to look weathered and worn. And glistening black feathered headgear. This combination gives this opera written in 1846, a very new edgy look and feel.

The relationship between Fashion and Opera has been fortified recently due to new affiliations between Emanuel Ungaro who designed the costumes for Mozart's La Clemenza di tito and Christian Lacroix costume design for Aggripina by Georg Freidrich Handel.

Who knew!!!

London Fashion Week Sass & Bide A/W '01 Collection

New York Fashion Week ended Thursday February 18, 2010 and London Fashion Week's A/W 2010 season jumped into high gear Friday February 19, 2010.

Sass & Bide, designers Sarah -Jane Clark (Sass) and Heidi Middleton (Bide) hale from Sydney Australia and the brand is notorious for its innovative and edgy look. They describe their A/W '10 Collection shown at London Fashion Week as "perfectly placed chaos; a modern clash of the beautiful, the strong, and the obscure", which focuses on what they refer to as "perfect disorder; layering natural elements with industrial embellishments on strong silhouettes, and tailored shapes".

The entire Collection is monochromatic, black and white, with splashes of gold and silver accent. Patterns appear somewhat tribal and geometric, with collars and necklines embellished with gorgeous beadwork, sequins, feathers, and embroidery. Shoulders are big and bold. The A/W 2010 Collection includes Tunics, Pantaloons, LBDs, Jumpsuits, and Gowns.

Eco Friendly Fashion: Trend or Fad?

Eco Friendly Fashion - Is going green and becoming eco-friendly in the world of fashion a trend that will gain momentum or a fad that will soon die out???

In an industry that deals in weaving dreams of oh so chic, the unattainable, the outlandish, outrageous, and breathtakingly beautiful, is it realistic to think that eco-friendly fashion will catch on with high-end luxury designers and design houses? A better question, are consumers who purchase high-end luxury merchandise really all that concerned with whether or not the merchandise is eco-friendly?

The Greenshows is the only fashion event during New York's Fashion Week committed to eco-friendly fashion. Now in its second season, the 4 day event showcased Fall/Winter 2010 Collections from 10 eco friendly Designers hailing from New York, London, Stockholm, Nova Scotia, Toronto, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

The selected designers incorporate one or more of the follow criteria: vegan/animal-free materials, fair trade, organic materials, recycled materials, ethically produced wool, natural dyes, and carbon footprint consciousness.

London Fashion Week's Estethica, is the British Fashion Council's eco sustainable initiative founded four years ago to showcase the growing movement of cutting edge designers committed to working eco sustainably, and is now considered the epicenter of London's ethical fashion industry.

Now in its 8th season Estethica will showcase 28 designers devoted to eco-friendly fashion. All Estethica designers adhere to at least one of the three Estethica principles of fair-trade and ethical practices, organic and recycled materials and are selected for both their ethical credentials and design excellence.

I have to mention that these initiatives although noteworthy and noble are not part of what is considered high fashion or high-end luxury brands and the shows are separate from “Official Fashion Week”.

From what was seen recently on the catwalks of Bryant Park during last week's New York Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week, eco-friendly fashion didn't appear to be a term in their vocabulary. Lush Furs, Supple Leathers, Gorgeous Suede's, Cozy Shearling, and Feathers Galore all made an appearance in numerous shows throughout the week.

If eco-friendly fashion is to flourish, let alone appear in abundance on main catwalks, high-end designers, consumers and the sponsors of Fashion Week will have to shift their collective consciousness to become more eco-friendly and green.

Alexander McQueen, Icon, Genius, and Fashion Visionary

Alexander McQueen, Icon, Genius, and Fashion Visionary
His breathtaking visions adorned the fashion world
By, Susie Jackson

New York Fashion Week commences as the world has lost one of the most talented British fashion designers, Alexander McQueen.

The designer born Lee Alexander McQueen was initially deemed the “enfant terrible” of the fashion world. He struck everyone by surprise with his controversial catwalks and innovative designs. Within 10 years he became one of the most notable and highly respected designers of the era.

McQueen’s intense fascination with fashion started from a young age. He started sketching and sewing dress for his sisters. He left of school at age 16 to pursue a career in fashion. He apprenticed for Saville Row’s Anderson & Shepherd and Gieves and Hawkes, where he learned traditional tailoring. He then learned pattern making from theater’s famous Angels & Bermans costumiers. He was able to sharpen his technical skills and it was these early influences that created the basis for his designs that were to come. McQueen traveled the world and went to Japan and Italy where he worked for Koji Tatsuno and Romeo Gigli. But in 1994 he returned to London where he completed a master’s degree in fashion at Central Saint Martins College. He showed his degree collection which was bought by Isabella Blow, the style guru and fashion director of Tatler.

In October of 1996 he was controversially appointed to chief designer of Givenchy after succeeding John Galliano. And in December of 2000 the Gucci Group acquired his label, where he also became the creative director. He extended his brand to fragrances and eyewear in 2003. And in 2006 he created McQ, an affordable denim based ready-to-wear line.

(McQueen and Samsonite Collection inspired by the human anatomy with a futuristic look)

In addition to his mainline collection, McQueen had formed various partnerships. In 2005 he partnered with Puma for a unique and unexpected footwear collection. And in February 2006 he partnered with Samsonite for cutting edge luxury travel accessories.

(Spring/Summer 2008 McQueen's signature billowy dresses)

His hugely successful career brought him numerous awards. He won British designer of the year four times between 1996 and 2003. In 2003 Queen Elizabeth II honored him as the commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. And in 2004 the British Fashion Council named him British Menswear designer of the year for his first menswear collection.

(Spring/Summer 2010 Collection of controversial Armadillo Shoes inspired by Charles Darwin's origins of species)

Alexander McQueen is known for his meticulously constructed garments, combining elements of British tailoring, French couture, and Italian manufacturing. He merged emotional power, raw energy, and contemporary nature to create his inspiration fashion brand. He created signature looks of billowing dresses, angular suiting, and dark romantic gowns. His clothing was not only innovative he was also known for his astounding fashion shows of drama, mixed design, and technology.

(McQueen's Spring/Summer 2010 Collection of a mix of structured, tailored, futuristic and modern)

Never did he waver from his attention to form, function, and elegance. For McQueen will be greatly missed but his passion, spirit, and strong point of view will continue through his garments.

Valentine’s Day: Holding On To the Loved and Embracing the New

A gift you can’t go wrong with-The Scent of Desire:
Do you remember the longing you feel when your pillow still smells like her after she left for work? Do you ever wear his shirt when he’s not around, just so the smell can remind you of him? Maybe you’ve experienced the sensuality of being held in his arms, encompassed by a smell that is unmistakably him.

This Valentine’s Day let the gift you give to your lover or partner be that special smell you remember. Study after study showsthat the level of attraction to your partner’s smell is often a reflectionof the healthiness of your relationship. Buying the right fragrance will set the mood for your romance and will be one of those small details that you will retain about your significant other for a lifetime.

For Her:

If your girlfriend or wife is a creature of habit – someone that likes classic perfumes and rarely tries something new, here area few suggestions that never fail:

A good choice is “Chance by Chanel”. It’s a sultry yet subtle year round flavor that’s suitable for any woman - a definitive staple of the Chanel fragrance line.

Another scent you can’t go wrong with is “D&G Light Blue”. It is one of those perfumes that smells sexy in a different way on every woman, but adds zest to your natural aroma - no matter who you are.

If the lady in your life likes to experiment with perfume, here are some of the newest flavors out there right now:

As a very strict Chanel fan, it’s exciting to admit that I finally fell in love with a different line of perfume. “Ralph Lauren Romance: Always Yours” is the sexiest and most seductive fragrance available today. It is a sweet scent that appeals to all of your senses. It reminds me of wearing white silk on a warm spring night-just sweet and sexy enough. For men purchasing this gift: buy it in the set that comes with a box of chocolates from Dylan’s Candy Store (what a brilliant idea from the Ralph Lauren family).

Then there is the more flirty new fragrance from Juicy Couture called “Couture Couture”. This perfume truly reminds you of a sexy date- lots of skin, nice heels and slow kisses down your neck to finish the night off.

For Him:

If your boyfriend or husband is a typical guy, wearing the same cologne for years, here are some time-tested classics that won’t disappoint:

“Dolce &Gabbana Pour Homme” should be in every man’s cologne collection. It is an essence that screams power without being obnoxious. It is strong enough to be noticed but sweet enough to truly be enjoyed.

If your man is more of a spicy type then “Burberry Touch” will do the trick. It has the elegance of the brand and the powerful edge of a CEO.

As much as I love the old fragrances above, there are some new scents that make my mouth water. If your man is willing to try some hot new products, these are my winners:
My ultimate favorite, the one I want to buy for every man in my life, is “John Varvatos Vintage”. I don’t know if it is possible to fall in love at first smell, but I confess I experienced some powerful desires when I first smelled this cologne. It is a strong fragrance; if the guy next to you on the subway is wearing it you will know. It is a night and day cologne but it projects easy class no matter when you wear it. It would be the perfect complement to a jacket, button down, and a neat pair of shoes.

And then there is “Versace Pour Homme”. This scent is not too powerful or overwhelming, but interesting and addictive enough for you to want to smell him again and again. For me, it brings to mind relaxing with a guy on a Sunday afternoon, him in a fresh white tee, blue jeans, and bare feet.

Whatever you choose to buy, remember fragrances are the low budget gift that will give you thousands of memories. Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy shopping. Check out all the great deals for these fragrances at Macy's
