New Boutique in Echo Park and it's E.P.I.C.

E.P.I.C. or  Echo Park Independent Co-Op is a new Boutique that opened two weeks ago.  The conceptual intent behind the boutique is to be a social bridge for the community in fashion, art, music, and environmental preservation.
Tristan Scott and Rhianon Jones, the proprietors, are true believers in eco-friendly fashion.  The team started working on the concept of opening a Boutique a year ago. They received the keys to the building in December, took off running and two weeks ago their dream came to fruition.
Rhianon designed the decor, custom counters and shelf space by sketching everything out on paperand its amazing! The fitting room is very spacious with Art Deco accents and  a beautiful chandelier hanging from the ceiling,  with none of the annoying fluorescent lights that can make a person look pallid.
The 100 year old building where E.P.I.C. is located has a long and varied history. The logo for the store (two rabbits each facing one another) has meaning for both, as 2010 is the Aztec Calender year of the rabbit, which symbolized prosperity, accomplishment in the outside world, unpredictability, humor, and vision. They describe the logo as crest-like.  My impression of the logo is that it is a reflection of themselves toward each other, which is a strong indication of the complementary relationship between the two.
E.P.I.C. located in the historic Jensen Recreation Center in the heart of Echo Park at 1712 Sunset Blvd., carries approximately 43 local Los Angeles designers and is basically a mouth piece for the independent designer.  There is a palpable sense of community in the neighborhood and that feeling is carried forward between the proprietors and the designers.
According to both Tristan and Rhianon the definition of fashion is "Fashion is Art" which should be controversial and make a statement. "The store is here to highlight the local designer" and E.P.I.C. is the mouthpiece for the designers, who actually create their own installation pieces to display their ART.
Tristan and Rhianon believe that because Echo Park is known for being such a creative community, now is the perfect time to open the boutique, as the most creative and fruitful work for artists comes during the struggle and strife of an economic downturn.  I couldn't agree more!  The neighborhood is very gritty and edgy, and E.P.I.C. is a reflection of that.
Upon entering the Boutique you can't help but notice how it's so full of light and space, has an amazing layout, and the clothes are displayed so that you can actually see them. The vibe is very cool, young, edgy, and avant garde.
E.P.I.C. carries clothing for men and women, accessories, a cosmetic line and candle line. I asked Tristan and Rhianon how they decide which designers to carry. They told me that they try to cover diversity of style by choosing what they like and by getting behind the designers and what they represent. They are all about fostering nurturing relationships in order to help the designer grow. A very symbiotic relationship.
Tristan and Rhianon took inspiration for the decor and inventory for the Boutique from the neighborhood, a very diverse local music industry, Art Deco, Modern French New Wave, and Patty Smyth.
Starting next month E.P.I.C. plans on having art installations on a monthly basis highlighting local artists in the area.
Lines E.P.I.C. carry include but are not limited to: 925LA, Alexandra Cassaniti, Ashton MichaelBrian Lichtenburg, deadbird, Dear Creatures, form and fauna, Gabby Applegate, Gregory Alexander, Himiku, House Of Bare, Howl, Kayu, Kim White Handbags, Kontorsion, LadyBoy Shoes, LAS Jewlery, Laura Kranitz, Le sang des betes , Luxary Jones, Maes Jewlery, Michelle Rose, Mike Vensel, Modern Lovers, Mohawk Street, Natalia Romano, Osei-Duro, Philip and Lillian bags by Alison Burns, Poppy and Quail, Prophetik, Propr, Reclaimed in LA, Seraph, Skarf, Smoke & Mirrors, Sqaures, Straydog,The Battalion, The Bryan Hearns Collection, Vanishing Creatures, & We As Folk

Presenting mySkin.com, an Innovative Website Specializing in Personal Skin Care

Whether we like to admit it or not, first impressions mean everything. For a job interview or a date, appearances can be a deal breaker. Skin plays an important role in these first impressions.

To deal with our skin insecurities we search through endless fad products, trying to create a daily skincare regime. But it’s not easy. Not every product is going to work for every person. Each one of us is so unique and different.

MySkin.com has the answer, where technology and skincare have collided, creating a unique experience. Through a combination of questions and computer algorithms mySkin.com figures out the best products for one’s own skin. But don’t worry skincare brands aren’t promoting their products; the recommendations are unbiased and based on consumer opinions. Typical questions include ethnicity, age, skin concerns, skin types, skin problems, and burning factors. MySkin.com searches through their large database consisting of 100,000 products from 4,500 different brands, finding the perfect products for you.

Two Harvard Business School graduates, a plastic surgeon and a biophysicist created the site. Along with leading cosmetologists and dermatologists, mySkin has created a way for people to make better decisions about skincare products.

Not only does the website recommend products, there are new widgets. Among the new widgets there is a forum to connect with individuals with similar skincare problems, a personal skincare journal, and the ability to talk with friends in real time about products.

Hello to all of the Beauty Ververs out there! Check out this behind the scenes look at an editorial fashion shoot with photographer Charles Yeh. I had the awesome opportunity to be the model for this shoot and I have to say the team came together to produce some amazing images. We had no plans to video the shoot, but after rummaging through my purse, I realized I had a small flip video camera and I tossed it over to Josh and filming began! Be sure to check out the team below, they are all awesome at what they do! Enjoy the video!

Makeup Show LA!!!

The Makeup Show Preview for Blogger was an amazing thing. I was able to talk to several vendors attending The Makeup Show hosted by the Powder Group.

Several Vendors that attended the show were: Gold Sponsor Make Up Forever, Platinum Sponsor Temptu...

When speaking with James Vincent and Michael DeVellis at the special reception, they stated they love to have the industry professionals re-united. However, it's not all about that they explained, it is mainly about reaching back to the Community of Makeup Artists and helping them with Educational and Beauty Courses.

The makeup show is considered as a Boutique where its beauty driven versus as IMATS. Michael says that IMATS is considered as Monsters and Brushes. He considers The Makeup Show a Boutique versus IMATS. He wants the makeup world to be a community and work together. The makeup show is about learning from other Artists rather than the entertainment or buying products for a discount.

Starting off with Make Up Forever: They have a Gold Icone that comes out Sping 2010-the colors are amazing! Also, coming out with aqua colors and he stated that it was limited edition. They have been around for over 26 years.

Crown Brushes are the TOP Brush company at makeup shows due to the pricing being very reasonable. They have something for everyone. The brushes last for a long time. James’ favorite brushes are Oval Foundation Brush you can use for moisturizer or concealed and another favorite brush Is Lash Brush Fan-this is a great brush for mascara- to not making your mascara overdone. There are so many brushes you can purchase at Crown brushes- you can get your full set of brushes for a reasonable price.

Looking at Embroylisse; this is a great moisturizer that usually can’t be found in the US. I was only able to have it to be purchased by a friend going to Paris. This moisturizer works for everyone. Now you can find it at the makeup show or online.

Dinair Airbrush makeup is easy to use, good for everyday. Walking around and getting to the next vendors-Naked Cosmetics. They have eyeshadows that you can mix colors in foundations, lip gloss. You can use this eye shadows as highlight, brush, lip gloss and of course as eyeshadows. They are multi-purpose products. Enkore Makeup was the Artist for Cosmetics. He was demonstrating how you can mix eyeshadows, lip gloss for everyday use or on set.

Young Blood was also another vendor and their products are amazing -if you love mineral products. They have put mineral products out for beauty artistry to fashion. Another amazing vendor that was there was Michelle at Shadow Shields. This is a product that is a MUST have in your makeup kit. It helps from your eye shadows residue from falling right on your perfect foundation and causing it to create raccoon eyes, causing you to remove your foundation. These shadow shields are so easy to use, you can use this even to make perfect lines on lips. Yaby Cosmetics was there in full effect…their eyeshadows are highly pigmented. They are small enough that you will not run out. You can create your own palette for your own preference.

OCC Cosmetics, they are known for their Airbrushing, however they also showed us their new line of colors. Lip Tars also showed of their new line which is amazing-love the names by the way. The four lips tars were Hoochie, Vapid, Demure, and Complex. Inglot was also an amazing line, their colors were so highly pigmented that other vendors were excited to see them. Their prices were pretty reasonable. But most of all the packaging of the products is so convenient, due to creating your own palette. Smashbox Cosmetics were there with their Head Artist, Lori Taylor. In speaking with Lori she stated that heartbreaker Liquid Liner is the best thing. It doesn't smudge and it really stays on. All the vendors have so many great new products you have to check them out. We can sit and talk about them all day. But putting them to great use is always awesome.

BOXeight Thinks Out of the BOX!

BOXeight (March 19 – March 21) is my favorite venue thus far for A/W 2010 Season.
Last season Peter Gurnz decided to forego the typical runway show and decided to shoot Installations instead.  I was intrigued, yet initially somewhat skeptical about the whole thing.  However, after undergoing the new BOXeight "experience" last season, I was completely and totally enamored.

What I love about BOXeight's installation concept is that it gives you an almost voyeuristic peek into the world of the Fashion photo shoot, from hair and makeup to styling, lighting, and shooting. There is so much going on at any given moment, there is no way a person could not be entertained.

So basically, what happens is each night there are anywhere from 4 – 5 photo shoots going on, with amazing Designers, brilliant Photographers, and abso gorgeous Models at any given time. The creative artistry in the air is palpable and it is definitely a sight to behold. I attended BOXeight all three nights. My first night, my friend Thom Scher and I were interviewed for a Fashion Series that only airs on DIRECTTV, we discussed the past, present and future of LA Fashion Week and our thoughts and impressions of BOXeight Fashion Week.

The 3 day line-up for Fashion: Refocus ~

Friday night ~ Skingraft by Ben Cope, Gold Spun by Adam Secore, Funktional by Ninelle Efremova, and Isabel Lu by Damon Kidwell.

Saturday night ~ Lloyd Klein by Robert Voltaire, Eduardo Lucero by August Bradley, Le Sang BĂȘtes by Laura and Steven Duncan, Michael Costello by Ben Cope, and Elkin by Dirk Mai

Sunday night ~ Orthodox by Catherine Asanov, Kanvis by Robert Sigler, Gabby Applegate by Sam Hessamian, Future Heretics by Peter Gurnz, and Postage by Ben Cope.

If you are looking for the traditional runway show then BOXeight is not for you, but if you are looking for an amazing experience that you can feel, touch, and taste you definitely will not want to miss out on BOXeight next season. I highly recommend it!!!

What a Novel CONCEPT!!!

Concept LA (March 22-23) the brainchild of Mike Vensel and Brady Westwater, took place at the historic Crocker Club located in the Spring Arts Tower in downtown Los Angeles.

Concept LA came to fruition in an attempt to bring some much needed structure and more importantly unification to the void LA Fashion Week has been trying to fill since the end of the MBZ/Smashbox LA Fashion Week venue.

I have to say that I was so very excited when my friend Mike told me about the new venue and the lineup. CLAFW was an amazing two day adventure with a gorgeous line-up of amazing local talent. The event was a combination of  both traditional; runway (love) and funky, edgy, avant garde; installation (love).

Monday night's line-up: Chelsea Rebelle ~ B:Scott ~ Fremont (runway shows) ~ Mike Vensel ~ Elmer Ave. ~ Otto Gates ~ Farm Tactics (installation).

Tuesday night's line-up: Jen Awad ~ martinMartin ~ The Battalion (runway) ~ Valerj Pobega ~ Skingraft ~ John Sakalis (installation).

Monday night's line-up attracted a great young hipster crowd as did Tuesday night. I actually sat next to proud mom of designer B: Scott in the front row and she was so gracious and charming.  Due to the popularity of the designer line-up on Tuesday night the venue was absolutely packed.  It was standing room only for all three shows. And absolutely jammed packed for the last show of the night, The Battalion.

I sat front row for almost all of the shows, but I was so busy networking prior to the third show, that I lost my front row seats =(.  So it was second row for my friend Cupid and I, but we still had a great view of The Batallion runway show.

Gotta give a shout out to Michael Shane who did an amazing job and really took care of me! Kitchen 24 for their amazing cupcakes and Dirty Blonde Cocktails for their flavored champagne.  I'm definitely not a fan of flavored champagne but this stuff was abso delish!

I have very high hopes for the future of Concept LA, I was very impressed with the production, venue, line-up, sponsors and even the volunteers were amazing, so friendly and knowledgeable. I think that we as a city can and will get to a point in the very near future where all, if not most shows for LA Fashion Week will be held in one place. I for one can't wait for that day to come.  This girl is tired of running all over this city to cover events for LA Fashion Week!!!!
